Photography tips

Over the last few years you have probably heard about and seen some HDR or High Dynamic Range photos.  There is basically 2 types of HDR images that you see - the ones that have very vivid and almost cartoonish appearance and the ones you don't recognise as being processed this way.  Well, whenever I use this technique I am for the end result to not be recognised as an HDR if I can help it.  It is a process I use very sparingly.

Everyone at one time has a go at food photography. Yes, I have had a go in the past and failed miserably! Taking photos of food and having it look good is not so easy.

I want to show a couple of my recent food photos and talk about how I made the shot. Over the last week, I set up 2 distinctly different "shoots" and worked them until I got what I was looking for.

Taking a photograph that implies something is moving can be a bit of a challenge. There are few ways of actually doing it and from some photos I took a few days ago of the Adelaide Classic bkie race - a pre-cursor of the Tour down under, I will demonstrate 2 different techniques that imply motion.

The Bike race was a great opportunity not only to see some of the best cyclists in the world go head to head in 25 laps on the street circuit but to grab a camera and take some photos of the event as well!

I had a message from a friend a few days ago mentioning that there was a particular rural scene that might have photographic potential. He was driving thru the area and didn't have his camera or the time to explore the possibilities. As this location is only about a 1/2 hour drive, after work I headed out with my camera to see what I could make of it.

This afternoon I headed out into the Adelaide hills to try and take a photo of a vineyard that I spotted several weeks ago. I got the photo but I will have to go back to the same place and take it several more times over summer and especially at the end of summer.

Since we were out in the Hills we kept driving and ended up near Summertown.

On the last Sunday of September each year we are fortunate to have the Bay to Birdwood wander past us. The B2B is a classic and vintage car run that starts at the Bay and finishes at the National Motor Museum 70km away in Birdwood in the Adelaide hills. The event alternates between classic and Vintage cars and this year it was the Classic run (cars between 30 and 50 years old).

I have never been one to read books on the subject but after hearing a lot of comments on a particular book I recently added it to my small collection.

Whenever you think of taking a landscape photo you typically reach for your wide-angle lens. Well, Sometimes it is not necessary.

On a recent outing, it was a pretty bleak winters day - the sun was behind dark clouds all day and it threatened to rain, but I went out and hoped for some reasonable photos.

Sometimes it is good just to take a different look at what you see. I went out for a walk to a nearby waterfall today and of course I took some photos.

My Different look comes about because I also took a series of photos using an R72 filter. This filter blocks most of the visible light spectrum and lets you take Near Infared Images.
