Photography tips

A journey in Photography and sharing of how I go about taking various types of photos. Discussions include software and camera equipment and how to make the most of your equipment in a given situation.

Rural Panorama

This afternoon I headed out into the Adelaide hills to try and take a photo of a vineyard that I spotted several weeks ago. I got the photo but I will have to go back to the same place and take it several more times over summer and especially at the end of summer.

Since we were out in the Hills we kept driving and ended up near Summertown.

Compliment

I have just got back home with an 8x10 print of a photo I took of my Cousin's little girl a couple of months ago.

Now, I usually get my smaller prints (6x8's and 8x10's) done at the local Rabbit photo (I take anything any bigger to a wonderful pro lab here in Adelaide).  I probably drop in at least once every couple of weeks to get photos printed as they do a great job, they are very convenient and the price is not too bad.

What caught my attention today was that one of the regular staff there asked me about the photo I was picking up - They asked me "Is this a Job or someone you know?"

Well, a question like this coming from a photo lab is a pretty decent compliment!  These are people who see hundreds (probably thousands) of photos a day and they asked me if it was a professional Job!  If the local photo lab that prints thousands a day is asking me this question then they mush have seen the quality of the photo - I am starting to get noticed.

Hey, who doesn't want to be noticed by people in the indusrty when you have a passion for what you do.  I guess it is time for me to finish getting my paperwork together and start promoting myself and pick up a few paid jobs.

And for the record, the photo I had printed today can be seen on my photo blog

Published!

I had a telephone call this afternoon from Jane Reilly from Channel 10 News.

The call was simply to let me know that they had chosen a photo I had submitted to be used at the end of the Weather segment tonight.

Every day, at the end of the weather the TV stations use a submitted photo that is weather related (prefereably Extreme Weather) to finish the segment with. Well, I have submitted a grand total of 2 photos within the last 6 months and not heard anything until today.

When I initially enquired about making submissions they told me that they generally chose a photo that had been submitted within a couple of weeks for inclusion. Well, I just checked back in my email and I made the submission at the end of August.

Ok, the photo - it can be found in my photoblog, I posted it on the 31st of August.

Now, Not only do the submitted photos get displayed on the news each night, but the best of them get put forward to be considered for the Extreme weather calender each year. Jane informed me that My photo has made the shortlist for the 2008 Calender!

So, from this experience I guess it does not hurt to try and promote your photos by whatever means you have at your disposal.  Yes, I have set up a recorder to record the segment that shows off my photo and I'll try and put together a short clip of it.

Bay to Birdwood 2007

On the last Sunday of September each year we are fortunate to have the Bay to Birdwood wander past us. The B2B is a classic and vintage car run that starts at the Bay and finishes at the National Motor Museum 70km away in Birdwood in the Adelaide hills. The event alternates between classic and Vintage cars and this year it was the Classic run (cars between 30 and 50 years old).
