Photography tips

A journey in Photography and sharing of how I go about taking various types of photos. Discussions include software and camera equipment and how to make the most of your equipment in a given situation.

Always check

Yesterday, I went out for a few hours to take some photos. I wanted some specific photos to post in my photoblog. I had a bit of feedback that It is called Adelaide thru my Lens, but there were hardly any photos of Adelaide to be seen.

So, I grabbed my bag, and headed off to a couple of places to take some photos. I had a good afternoon out and took around 50 or so photos from a couple of different places overlooking the City. It was a little hazy, and I hoped to get at least a few decent pictures out of this lot.

time for a service

The rubber grip on one of my E300's has decided it no longer wants to stay attached to the camera. I have tried a couple of things to stick it back on and so far nothing has worked.

I have tried double sided tape, silicone and finally contact cement. I just cannot get the rubber to stick. Anyway, I was looking at the grip today and found that it is now a little bit bigger than the inset area where it goes - I guess that over the last 18 months it has stretched. I am going to call up Olympus and find out about getting it serviced.

I hope that It won't take too long to do as it is only 8 weeks until I go on holidays and I certainly don't want to go without it.

microstock agencies

A lot of photographers, both amateur and professional sell their photos online. They either go with a traditional stock agency, or use a microstock agency. Well, There is always a lot of arguments both for and against the microstocks. But lets not get into this argement here!

they were a hit

If you read my previous post, you would know I took some pics for the band, 4AM. Well, They guys in the band loved the shots, and plan on adding some to their website and to update their promo poster pictures.

It is always good when the people who you are taking photos of appreciate what you have done.

Now all I need to do is to find a few bands who want some of their own photos.

Low Light Photography

I have avoided photographing anything where I needed to use high ISO settings. I have always been concerned about how noisy the phots turn out, and how much effort in post processing it might take to get any sort of reasonable pictures from the effort involved.

Well, Last night I took the plunge in a big way - A friends band were performing at a local Pub. I asked them if they wanted any pics and they jumped at the chance! so, I grabbed my bag and went along to see If I could get some shots.

Bag purchased

Well, I finally went out and took all my stuff with me and selected an equipment bag. In the end, it was not the one I was originally going to get.

I looked up on the net suitable bags, and found a local shop who stocks them and took all my gear that was ging to be packed into the bag with me. Firstly, I just put 1 camera with lens attached into each of the bags and put them on. It was pretty obvious to me within a few seconds which bags would not be too comfortable to carry. The just wearing a bag with something in it test actually only left me a choice of 1, with another one a close 2nd.

The one I ended up getting was the Lowepro Compu Trekker AW, and the 2nd choice was the Mini Trekker. These 2 bags are almost identical in size, except the Compu Trekker is just slighty more square at the top giving just a little bit more internal room. All up my bag and gear comes in at 8kg - which is right on the limit for airline carry on luggage.

The first thing I did was to load all my gear into the bag at the shop and I then went out to try it. I went to the top of Mount Lofty (overlooking Adelaide) grabbed my bag and took some photos. I swapped between having each camera in my hand shooting and having it in the Backpack. After an hour of walking around with the pack on my back I was pretty happy with my choice.

Editing our photos for print

If you read the last post, you know a little about cropping, resizing and compressing your photos for use on a computer or website. well, now I am going to go thru a few things to get the best possible print from your digital files.

You are going to hate me again, because we have to do some basic maths to understand how much we can crop a photo and how big it needs to be if it is going to be printed. we will get to this in a minute or so. First, I will assume that we are going to prepare our pictures and take them to the local photo lab to do the printing for us.

Editing our photos for the web

Most of our digital pictures will only ever be shown on a computer screen, and I'll discuss some of the aspects about some of the things that you will want to edit.

Remember how I mentioned Picassa, well, if you have not got it, then go and grab a copy. The examples I will use will be easy to understand if you can see them for yourself. I don't have every bit of software for every digital camera, that is why I choose (cheap) 3rd party programs when they are suitable to do a job, and it means you only have to learn how to use it once.

basics of managing your photos

Alright, everyone knows when you buy any digital Camera that it usually comes with some sort of software. The bundled software can be good, ok or total crap! It is impossible to know if you are going to get something decent as nearly all camera reviews tend to gloss over the bundled software.

Now, like most of you, I am a bit of a cheapscape and when I can, I look for various free software. I am just making 1 assumption here and that is your camera can produce a jpg file.

My Digital Darkroom workflow

I shoot nearly everything in RAW format and as such, I need to "develop" every image into a useable format.  The normal format for me is to end up with a jpg file in order to present the photo in my photoblog. In some instances, when I am going to do a large print I produce a tiff file.

A large print to me is 9x12 inch or bigger, and the pro lab that I use to do my printing can print either from a jpg or 8-bit tiff file. If possible, I use a tiff file, as I normally get them to do colour correction on all printed images. They match the colourspace to their Printer colour profile and I get a much better looking picture.

Now, onto the software that I have settled on....

A little about me

Well, I thought I should post a little info about who I am and a bit about my photography.

My fisrt experience in taking any sort of photos was way back in my childhood. I guess I was about 9 or 10 years old and went on holidays to a national park with my gran. She took all the grandchildern on a weeks holiday, 1 each year. During this Holiday, I was loaned a camera - don't even know what sort it was or anything and a couple of rolls of film. I took some photos and even had one of them of a waterfall blown up. I was hooked!

photo equipment bags

Well, I have booked a holiday, and I am going to need a decent bag to pack most of my gear into to so I can take it with me. At the moment, I have a very small shoulder bag that will hold 1 camera, spare batteries, flash cards and Flash. For most things I do this is big enough, as I generally put 1 camera in the bag and I am carrying the other one.

But, as I am flying, I need to be able to pack everything into a nice bag for the flight to and from and for lugging around and taking pics while I'm away.

Hello

A few weeks ago when I was chatting to a friend, and referred them to a post I made in a forum about a particular photo technique, they asked my why I did not put these into my own website.

Well, I do have several websites, but I don't have one specifically about photography, so I decided to do it as a blog.  I already have a photoblog, where I post a new photo each day, but I do not talk much about the picture or anything like that.  The photoblog is just that - all about the photos and only the photos.

Now, this blog wil be not just about A photo, but more about how I created a particular photo, camera gear, software and probably from time to time even a short photo essay.

Take a look at my photoblog
